What is Puppy Socialization
Socializing your new puppy is essential for a well-rounded puppy. It is more than just having your pup meet other dogs and people, it is a vital time to introduce him/her to various environments, textures, items, people, and more. By the time your pup is 12 weeks old, you should be well on your way to completing socialization, and by 16 weeks, the socialization period has closed.
Also vitally important is being aware of the way the socialization period overlaps a typical vaccination schedule. Most puppies won’t be fully vaccinated during the socialization period, which can open them up to getting sick. However, if you wait to socialize your puppy until
he/she is fully-vaccinated, you will have missed your chance. This is why the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) takes the position that it should be a standard of care to socialize before they are fully-vaccinated. (See the AVSAB’s position statement here.)
How do we mitigate these concerns?
For any outings with your pup before they are fully-vaccinated, you should carry your dog or provide a spot with a barrier (such as a blanket or bed). For safety purposes, our classes require your puppy must have their first set of vaccinations at least two weeks prior to class (proof of vaccination required), and you will be required to bring a blanket or large bed from home that your dog will rest on or that you will carry them in.
Other Important Information
It is important to know these classes shouldn’t be used as a play dates. Due to safety purposes with puppies, many classes will have specific rules that your dog won’t meet other dogs in close proximity (unless that is the specific subject of the class). When registering for classes, take a look at the listed subject we will be covering in that class.
Classes
Training to a T, LLC is now offering single socialization classes where you pay for each class individually. Open classes are listed below. Each class is 45 minutes to 1 hour and will cover between 1 to 3 socialization items (items can be medical equipment, textures, household items, various people, etc.). They are held in various locations depending on what we are working on. Some classes are outdoors, so plan to come dressed for the weather. All classes will be in the West Valley/Magna area (around 5600 West-8400 West) unless otherwise noted.
Cancellation Policy: Some classes may have to be cancelled due to weather. If that is the case, we will reschedule to another time, or you may choose to receive a refund.
Refund Policy: There are no refunds for socialization classes outside of weather cancellations. Please be sure you can attend before registering and that you know what subjects we are covering in the class you sign up for.
